So today I will be writing a review on a movie I watched recently, it was one movie I was expecting a lot, I hear about the story and got really interested and also I found the cast quite interesting, specially Jared who I admire a lot and it has been a while since his last movies, also because I follow him in Instagram and well I was able to follow a bit his process of transformation for his role, so that made me really curious about this movie.
The beginning of the movie is not really impressive and to some people, may lead to ask "Why am I watching this again?" but it is just the minutes, it gives the impression it is going to be a slow movie, but then you realize you need to know that, because you need to know the lead character to be able to understand him for the rest of the movie. The rest of the character are introduced with a great timing, not like in some other movies when is like they have to appear so there is mo timing, here everything follows an order and it is proper. The movie is crude, even the photography and light in colors is crude but it is life and goes perfect wit the story being developed.
The engagement of the actor for their roles is amazing, the transformed completely, you hardly can recognize it, they own the character, they are not longer the actor they are their character. Matthew is Ron, Jared is Rayon and there is no doubt about it.
You as a viewer get attach with the characters and feel sad and they are passing through a bad moment and smile if they are good.
As I said before the movie is crude and doesn't say thing in a pretty way, it just shows you how life is, and was for the real people, who this movie was based on.
The character I loved the most was Rayon and I am not saying this because of my admiration for Jared, I am talking about the character not the actor.
Rayon gives that spark to the movie and to the main character of the movie. Rayon gives something into Ron's life, like a light a strength and you while watching this movie can appreciate this. You know there is no sexual love between the characters, it is something different way more special, a real friendship and you just love what is happening.
The moment Rayon appears on the screen a smile draws on your face, because Rayon is bright and beautiful and is just magical how his appearance just lights the mood of that moment of the movie.
Rayon is a lovely character and is impossible to grow fond of him, if he is rejected by society makes you upset, if he feels touched then you smile feeling good for him. I mean he is a beautiful soul, he was portrayed perfectly. I love the fact that Rayon wasn't portrayed as a diva, that is how usually transsexuals are usually portrayed, making the audience laugh at them more than understand them. But with Rayon you see that he is a woman, a beautiful one that unfortunately born in a man's body and you even feel bad because of that. I think Jared played Rayon perfectly, he knew what to transmit to people who watches this movie, he knew the true essence of Rayon.
The we have the lovely Jennifer Garner as Eve he charachter is passive in somehow, I don't know if this is the right way to describe it, anyhow Eve is a very important character in this movie but again I wouldn't know how to describe it, she is lovely, another light to the crude reality but then you see how her perception changes, you know she is a person who does what she thinks is right, you know she is honest but I think she describes very well when you see how things are not working well when you are and you see cinism and you know that in somewhere else someone is fighting that, that there is another way of making things work right not that way that you are seeing. She changes the way she thinks and always staying true to herself and supporting Ron.
but makes me think that probably Eve is not very different from Jennifer. I love her as actress and person, she is smart, lovely, kind and strong and her characters always resemble that. I like her since Alias and in interviews she always seems kind and strong, so I am guessing Eve and Jennifer are like each other.
Matthew suffered an incredible transformation, he is nothing like the Matthew we usually saw in other movies, not that handsome man, with gallant and manly features. I don't know if the change is only because of the lost of weight plus the mustache but you cannot recognize him at all. Then we have the character of Ron, is not like you would imagine on Matthew. Now I don't know much about Matthew's characters because I have seen just a few movies of him but he always give me the impression of a gentleman, kind, respectful, strong willed, smart and polite and well Ron is not like that. Anyhow once again we see on Matthew what a good actor is because you forget he is Matthew and you just see him a Ron.
In conclusion this movie is not your typical Hollywood movie and I am so happy for that. This movie is a work of art! it opens up your mind, it forces you to see this reality that people doesn't want to talk or mention. It makes you have another vision towards HIV, Gay people, Transsexual people and towards government and medicine.
The movie presents you three strong souls who fight against the forces of a horrible sickness, a horrible system, fighting themselves and discovering themselves, discovering new people and facing the world with other eyes and hopefully us as the audience can learn from them and see with other eyes too.
If you read this and haven't watched this movie, then I ask you to watch it.
I was surprised though because I still think that this movie didn't have all the publicity it deserved it!I knew was nominated for Oscar and well it did receive three Oscars but still wasn't enough. I don't know how popular was in the States but here in New Zealand was pretty plain and didn't last in cinemas for too long and was only in some cinemas, the cinemas that show art movies. I think this movie was not just for art movie theaters but for regular cinemas too! I mean I cannot always go to the cinema but I don't worry much because usually movies tend to stay a long time so I always manage to go and watch but this time...it wasn't! so I had to watch online! I felt pretty disappointed at New Zealand cinemas...and many people have no idea about this movie and makes me blood boil because all the movies that are more than entertaining and tell you the truth of life, are the less popular and is the case of this movie.
Anyhow maybe one day will write a review about that fact...
And if you are just a curious then watch it, is up tp you what you think at the end but this movie is indeed a must!
